Troop 189 is very active in serving the local community. One of our ongoing projects is the care of a two mile stretch of Route 234 (Dumfries Rd). Our adopted section is between Exeter Road and Waterway Drive, both sides. You can read about the program at http://www.virginiadot.org/programs/prog-aah-default.asp. We cleanup the section four times a year. Prior to cleaning up you must be familiar with the safety aspects of the event. The troop has a DVD that goes over these details. The area VDOT office provides orange vests for safety along with the garbage bags. All you have to show up with is hard sole shoes, gloves, appropriate clothing for the weather, and water.
The area's coordinator is Kathleen Simmons and can be reached at 703-366-1927 or kathleen.simmons@vdot.virginia.gov
To arrange for cleanup equipment, contact "Duke" with VDOT at 571-220-5287. Equipment needed are bags (30ish), two signs, and orange vests. The VDOT office (18200 Jefferson Davis Hwy) is located in Dumfries off Jefferson Davis Highway (southbound) on the left side just after the left turn to Graham Park Middle School. They are open Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. It's best to pick up the equipment in the morning.
You must submit a cleanup report to both the VDOT website and to Kathleen Simmons.http://www.virginiadot.org/programs/prog-aah-report.asp is VDOT's address; Kathleen Simmons email address is above; send her the following report AAH pickup form. The reason for the two reports is that the internet version has not been making it to Kathleen.
